“Le courage c’est de chercher la vérité et de la dire ; c’est de ne pas subir la loi du mensonge triomphant qui passe, et de ne pas faire écho, de notre âme, de notre bouche et de nos mains aux applaudissements imbéciles et aux huées fanatiques ”.” – Djordje Kuzmanovic
The ideological
battleground: liberal vsilliberal – the mark of Cain
The term liberalism has different permutations that render it complex.
When viewed in the European context, liberalism is viewed by many as the
driving force for the EU; it is seen as the antidote to nationalism & authoritarianism,
a panacea of sorts. A British paper, the
FT, recently wrote about an arc of illiberal politics gaining ground through Poland,
Hungary & to a lesser extent Slovakia & Austria. So much so, Hungary's prime minister, Viktor
Orban stated in a speech in 2014 that he is an advocate of "illiberal
democracy" as a response to Merkel’s comments that Hungary should pursue ‘liberal
democracy”.
“The insistence
by Orbán that he is Hungarian first, and Christian, deeply offended the
internationalist and devoutly secular leadership of the EU. This was deviation
from the founding principles, which were less about liberal democracy and more
about a certain ideology within it.”
I’ve seen
time after time, the peculiar use of illiberal as a word in discourse &
policy papers. It is often linked to “illiberal surveillance state, policy”, “identity
politics”, “regressive mindset”, or “illiberal governance”. Additionally the proponents
of ‘liberalism’ are quite vocal about seeking a raft of sanctions or outright
bans on challenges to their worldviews.
Russia
is regularly labelled as an “illiberal state”, because it contradicts the EU
ideological stance. Illiberal democracy as a concept is seen as a serious
challenge to the “European order”. The
amount time & energy that is spent by politicians & behind-the-scenes policy-makers
alike, trying to police those states that dare to show an “illiberal streak” is
mind-boggling & ultimately counter-productive.
There is a complete
inability on the part of EU elites & the MSM to deal with opposing
viewpoints with reasoned arguments. The
EU is supposed to be about having a robust policy on human rights & freedom
of expression but instead it is slipping further into a near totalitarian dogma
as evidenced by the fact that top-level decision makers are totally
unaccountable & ignore the grassroots concerns of Europeans. Moreover, even elected leaders act in a pushy
manner, antagonizing Europeans in the process. One example where Mrs. Merkel
has pertinently demonstrated this is by imposing her views to the Eastern
European states on how to implement migrant policies.
Increasingly,
EU policy-making decisions don't stand up very well to scrutiny and criticism,
as can be seen with the raft of sanctions against Russia, which has effectively
crippled large swaths of the European agricultural sector.Another example is the chaotic &
whimsical relationship between Turkey & the EU, overlooking the dramatic deteriorating
of human rights in the region. The EU by its own nature is elitist,
undemocratic & intolerant & has been steamrolling its ‘liberal values’ for
several decades now.
Many Central
& Eastern European states joined the EU with the anticipation of improved
prospects & high expectations for their citizens economically &
socially. An overlooked, issue is that most people in these countries are
still quite poorer than their Western counterparts despite all of the EU achievements
to uphold “liberal values”.However, in
recent years some countries, it could said that the people have a jaundiced view
regarding these EU values that have proved to be hollow, as well as a feeling
of having been deceived.So something
had to give. The electorate voted in
significant numbers for alternative political leaders, the MSM subsequently pulls
out of its hat the ‘illiberal’ card. The
MSM acts as a gatekeeper, by serving the interests of the elite, thus widening
the gap between the European people & EU institutions. It also steadfastly applies the EU core ideology,
based on “liberal values”, as one voice; they can easily intimidate & denounce
opponents as ‘illiberal’ that try to move away from dogmatic EU policies set in
stone.
The EU 'liberals'
who are:
cheering on the uncontrolled migrant waves into Europe; (without any consideration for upholding existing border controls & laws);
lending their support to so-called 'moderate rebels' in Syria, hell-bent on massacring their opponents;
shutting down freedom of expression & dissenting views, (mostly due to islamphobia concerns + due toTurkey's demands). No more placards with Je Suis Charlie).
backing of openly neo-nazi & fascists groups in Ukraine and turning a blind eye to extrajudicial punishments & killings.
But keep playing the broken record of "iliberal democracies"!

Erdogan charge you for 'insult' in your country? http://goo.gl/t1EQmH
⦁ The EU migrant crisis: unfolding drama ⦁ The EU and Turkey: a pandora's box ⦁ Turkey, Syria & IS: keeping not so mum
Some key players in their own words: The leader of the Liberals group, Guy Verhofstadt from Belgium: “Europe is trying to outsource this refugee crisis, without taking its responsibility to protect those in need. It is positive that the EU will work more closely together with Turkey, but we should not make ourselves dependent on a country which is becoming increasingly authoritarian”. The leader of the group of the far left, Gabriele Zimmer (Germany), made no exception. "We cannot accept a dirty deal with Turkey. Through our negotiations and our actions we must protect the rights of refugees and call for an immediate end to Erdoğan's war on the Kurdish people." Hungarian President Viktor Orbán: "We do not want the EU to sit down to negotiate with Turkey, while giving the impression that it is Turkey which will save the EU. One cannot negotiate if the other party thinks that they are their negotiating partner’s last hope”. Turkish Prime Minister Davutoglu's message at NATO headquarter: "No Turkish President, Premier or any other authority will apologise for doing our duty."
The EU is holding on dearly to a strange version of European Values, similar to what we have seen with the unwavering support for post- Maidan Ukraine. It is continuing to turn a blind eye to some pretty nasty events taking place both in Ukraine and also Turkey. Take some examples of the much vaunted & glorified "European Values": media freedoms, minority rights & human rights both for Ukraine & Turkey:
⦁ Journalists are being killed, prosecuted & jailed for presenting a different viewpoint; (Serena Shim & Oles Buzina); ⦁ Civilians have been being targeted and killed, based solely on where they live and what language they speak; (Russian speakers, Donbass & Kurds who make up 18% of the population); ⦁ Established links & support to some unsavoury extremely nasty groups; (Aidar, Azov, IS, Al Nusra). ⦁ Vicious repression of public protest, (Odessa, Mariupol & Gezi Park)
Never mind, just another fact to add into the equation is regarding Cyprus. The illegal Turkish occupation of North Cyprus continues to this day, without the EU even being a bit concerned about it. Erdogan said back in 2011 "There is no country called Cyprus", http://www.todayszaman.com/diplomacy_erdogan-there-is-no-country-called-cyprus_251037.html Human tidal flow The EU is totally impotent in dealing with the ongoing migrant crisis, originating from Turkey. Some 800,000 people have reached Greece from Turkey this year alone. Instead it adopted a series of 'sweeteners' to Turkey, in the hope that would offset the migrant crisis back closer to their homelands. ⦁ The EU commits to match the funds that Turkey is spending on the over 2.5 million refugees that are in its territory; so it has offered 3bn Euros. ⦁ If Turkey implements successfully the EU action plan, it would lead to a speeding-up of the process of visa-liberalisation with Turkey. ⦁ Implementation of the EU action plan would “re-energise" the negotiation process for Turkish EU Accession. http://ec.europa.eu/news/2015/11/20151129_en.htm
Given that Turkey has claimed that it has spent over 7bn € on migrants, it is becoming apparent that the EU action plan package is just bribery to hold on 'migrants'. When the money runs out or there a spat with the EU over something, what will happen next? The migrants are being used as pawns in a dark and dangerous geopolitical game. There are literally tens of thousands participating in the migrant trafficking route between Turkey & Greece, right under the noses of the Turkish authorities. They see both the migrants & the EU leadership as easy pickings, weak and feeble, which is the case, judging by a tweet made by Burhan Kuzu, a Presidental advisor to Erdoğan, as reported on 2nd Dec 2015 in the Today's Zaman:
“The EU finally got Turkey's message and opened its purse strings. What
did we say? ‘We'll open our borders and unleash all the Syrian refugees
on you,'” Kuzu stated in his controversial tweet. Not much in the way of a charm offensive, was it? Indeed it is a case of blackmail, pure & simple. Turkey is quite capable of stopping the migrants flow, it has done so in the past, when it suited it to do so. But since summer 2015, the spigot has been turned on full and a steady stream of migrants have made the journey across the Aegean and up through the Balkan to reach the EU. Thousands of businesses along the Turkish coastline thrive on the back the smuggling routes by supplying boats & lifejackets & other sundries. Other criminal groups make money on producing fake Syrian ID documents, as highlighted by a Dutch journalist. The EU isn't willing at all to play hardball with Erdogan, because he holds all of the 'migrant' cards in his hand, along with the cross border support for a range of terrorists groups in Syria. The Turks understand this clearly and twist the EU elite around their little finger. To back the EU into a corner they can quote " European Values" to the nth degree and the EU elites act like doomed sailors enchanted by mermaids. The hapless EU has not even tried to confront him, to get the Turkish government to stop the boats, dismantle the smuggling gangs. Surely, "European Values" are a stake here, so the first step would be for Brussels to send a clear message to Ankara, one of" first sort out the rampant criminality at the root of this and then we can start to talk about 're-energising' EU Accession talks". But no, the Turks say "cough up and pay what we deserve". So it wasn't surprising to hear that hours after the EU
Turkish talks, lip-service is being provided by Turkey as it rounded up
some 1,300 migrants on Monday. http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/11/30/us-europe-migrants-turkey-idUSKBN0TJ1WX20151130 Not sure how long this action on the part of the Turkish authorities will last though. The genie is out of the bottle Brussels is stymied by a complete lack of forceful 'front' on this huge issue. This is mostly due to one person, Angela Merkel, who unilaterally sent out the 'invites' via the mass media, on behalf of the EU, without any prior or prepared policy or program in place. Not surprisingly a group of EU countries have recoiled in horror at the way this had been handled and said no to being asked to share Merkel's folly. http://www.esiweb.org/pdf/Post-Summit%20paper%20-%20The%20devil%20in%20the%20detail%20-%2029%20Nov%202015.pdf Is the EU unwittingly helping the Turkish authorities with a potential land grab of Northern Syria, as well as facilitating ethnic cleansing of Syrians? This article featuring a headline from a Turkish newspaper should send shivers down the spine of any self-respecting person. It describes how Aleppo should become part of Turkey. Invariably, both ISIS & the FSA have displaced tens of thousands of Syrians in the region and as a result, many fled into Turkey as refugees. Many of them have been lured by migrant 'touts' to leave Turkey for the EU. The EU is now saddled with a huge influx of Syrians, all due to a very convoluted machinations & political skulduggery. IS and the oil angle
Turkey exerts its influence overboth ISIS & the 'Turkmen rebels', mostly through the oil smuggling business, as well as military strikes. It is a huge money spinner for Turkey and ISIS, barely untouched by the US -led airstrikes for well over a year. Revelations on the extent and scope of the oil trade is only now being published in the mainstream press. See here & here for examples. Turkey' backing of terror attacks The EU cannot say that it wasn't aware of the Turkish double standards in combating IS terrorism since credible doubts did surface a while back, especially so, if we take one snapshot: the attacks on Kobane in June 2015, where the Kurds accused Turkey of letting IS fighters move into Kobane via Turkey. Take for example this headline: "Turkey's President Erdogan Denies Helping Islamic State Massacre Civilians in Kobane." https://news.vice.com/article/turkeys-president-erdogan-denies-helping-islamic-state-massacre-civilians-in-kobane http://www.dw.com/en/is-supply-channels-through-turkey/av-18091048 Likewise the well-planned attack on Kessab, in April 2014 on the Syrian-Turkish, bears the hallmarks of Turkish complicity in the take-over and massacre of Christian inhabitants. Moderate & IS terrorists, supported by Turkish gunships & artillery launched an attack from within Turkey. None of this rang alarm bells in the corridors of power of Brussels. What does it say about the whole concept of the EU power base? Flawed, warped & perverted are words that spring to mind. Once more Turkey took advantage of the EU's ineptitude, to carry on if as nothing bad had happened. The problem is that Russia through Vladimir Putin has shone a bright spotlight on this cosy relationship between IS and Turkey. Yet the EU bimbles along, disregarding the nastiness and illegal activities taking place. Stunned, shocked, well you should be. Another huge dose of "European Values" dumped by the wayside. No one within the Brussels corridors of power has shown any concern. The real victims of the Syrian conflict are to be in found in their millions, as IDPs in Syria, or in refugee camps in Lebanon, Jordan & Turkey. Many of the ethnic minorities have been unable to get visas to go the West. A Polish journalist, Witold Gadowski, asks this question: “The real victims of the war are in the camps,”
“Why are the camp survivors pleading unsuccessfully to obtain visas for
various European nations and being denied, while the young men are
immediately taken in with open arms and presented as refugees?”
- Because the EU is a ship of fools, lured & trapped into a self-absorbed mindset, unwilling to tackle the core issues at stake. http://canadafreepress.com/article/77282 Link to the SU-24 shooting-down The Turkish authorities have visibly cast their lot with Sunni
terrorists, Mafia & smugglers for some time now, although everyone
in the European media & political circles seemed to have hushed it
all down. Now this is being laid bare by Russia, as a result of a
reckless and audacious Turkish action of shooting down a Russian military jet. In an apparent decision-making time frame of 5 minutes and
with an airspace infringement of only 17 seconds. This
latest event on the Syrian-Turkish border has not deterred the EU
leadership in the least from continuing with a "business as usual"
philosophy with Turkey. The latest news is that the EU is giving Turkey
3bn Euros. You might well say, "but isn't the timing just a little
wrong?" Heck, no the EU, like the Titanic carries on in the foggy night,
despite the warnings. Bear in mind, the AKP party of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan only won snap parliamentary elections on November 1st, so it is in a confident position domestically & politically. This week alone the ever defiant tone continues to set by Turkey's leadership, in the wake of the SU-24 ambush: "The protection of our land borders, our airspace, is not only a right, it is a duty," he said. "We apologize for committing mistakes, not for doing our duty." http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/11/30/us-syria-crisis-turkey-nato-idUSKBN0TJ14F20151130 "No country should ask us to apologize," Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu told reporters following a meeting with NATO's secretary general in Brussels. Interesting comments made in an interesting meeting, was it scheduled before the SU-24 shoot-down? I'd loved to have been a fly on that wall. The timing is intriguing to say the least. France jumped on the "let's bomb Syria" bandwagon following the Paris attacks, then the UK & Germany decided to join in the illegal military campaign against Syria. NATO is currently building up air assets in southern Turkey. [See blogpost:http://lepontduhadu.blogspot.fr/2015/11/turkish-back-stabbing-nato-part-2.html] The big problem is that the Turkish government is losing its nerves & will continue to do while the Russians remain active in Syria. The Russian air operations have radically changed the balance on the ground, to the detriment of Turkish backed rebel/terrorist groups. It is a matter of time before some other 'incident' takes place that will impact not on the region, but might badly affect the EU as well.
1st part of video : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fYe2ZamKQ78
Relations between the West, Russia, Ukraine & the SCO being discussed on a Ukrainian TV programme in 2006. It’s very weird to see the now Ukraine president Petro Poroshenko & his nazi leader Oleh Tyahnybok together listening to an energetic Zhirinovsky... Surreal! Nearly a decade later, it is nevertheless very VERY relevant today to pick up on some of the points made on this TV show.
Zhirinovsky might be seen as a clown in Russian politics, but some of the points that he made were very perceptive. I do not condone or agree necessarily with the whole content, but the points made back in 2006 are astonishingly pertinent in a number of political areas, especially in understanding the geopolitical mindset & the lead up to events in 2014. It is a shame that Zhirinovsky’s bombastic comments about China & Russia & SCO nuclear might & invincibility, hinder what otherwise some valid & thought-provoking points.
Zhirinovsky didn't mince his words about the possible future of Ukraine & NATO.
Notice at the beginning of the show, Zbigniew Brzezinski refers to Russia as a no-man's land between Europe & China. That should have been a serious warning alert to Russia, but who really paid notice to it then?

Ditto for Feb 2014 events but substantially worse in format with Oleh Tyahnybok & co leading the way forward.

Donbass is a long standing industrial heartland; with a high concentration of metallurgical & chemical factories. A 2010 report stated that there were over “1,100 industrial enterprises of mining, metallurgical, chemical, power and heavy engineering industries”, located in the region.
“One fifth of the state’s industrial potential – of which 78% consists of environmentally hazardous production facilities of metallurgical and extractive industries, electricity generation and coke industry – is concentrated within the territory of Donetsk Oblast which makes up only 4.4% of the total area of Ukraine.”
The situation
The so-called "ATO"- Anti Terrorist Operation has been taking place for just over a year. The steady destruction of the industrial base of Donbass is beginning to be noticed, particularly the environmental aspects. An article by the Zoi environment network deals with this topic & stated this “Although obtaining accurate data is difficult, indications are that the conflict has resulted in a number of civilian health risks, and potentially long-term damage to its environment.” Perversely, this concern has been voiced by Kiev government officials, such as in September 2014, where the Ukrainian Ecology Minister Andriy Mokhnik spoke to Radio Liberty about flooding of coal mines. He stated that “The Russian troops and mercenaries in Donbas are intentionally ruining infrastructure, resulting in catastrophic environmental pollution”. Kiev simply denies the involvement of its army, so-called volunteer groups in the wholesale destruction of Donbass.
On a side note, it beggars belief that Kiev can put the blame squarely on the Russians, when there is ample & clear evidence of Kiev’s deliberation targeting of key infrastructure in the Donbass region. One example of this is the evidence of captured Kiev ATO maps with targeting positions written down. This pathetic political blame game shows the level of absurdity and surreal Catch-22 world that the post-Maidan Kiev government lives in. Even Poroshenko commented on the destruction later in October 2014, where he stated that “half of the infrastructure and 42 percent of the industry” of Lughansk and Donetsk (Donbass) have been destroyed as the result of hostilities. Of course there is a reason for exploiting this topic, since he also mentioned that “But my trips around the world show that we will be able to collect $1 billion from investors and restore Donbass very soon”. So it boils down to trying to get money, supposedly to help the region. He is melodramatizing the conflict since large swaths of Donbass is extremely unlikely to see any of so-called “reconstruction finance”. Indeed to put this into perspective, Kiev has withheld all social security payments & salaries in Donbass, since the beginning of the summer in 2014. By May 2014, the outstanding payments were already to the tune of 5 million hryvnas. Extrapolate this conservative figure for 1 whole year to get an idea of the figure for up to now.
In Euromaiden’s own words, the ecological destruction is briefly described: “In the course of the ATO, artillery targeting has caused fires and explosions at several ecologically dangerous production facilities. Among them are the Avdiyivka and Yasynivsk chemical plants, the Lysychansk oil processing and Kramatorsk industrial engineering plants, as well as the Tochmash and Styrol factories.” Effectively, Kiev’s media has listed the areas damaged in the conflict. Taking into consideration this information, it is possible to put together more details on the deliberation devastation experienced by the people of Donbass. Weapons used include mortar fire, artillery shells, MLRS rockets, and even powerful Tochka-U (SS-21 Scarab) missiles.
A disturbing pattern is revealed, of destruction on a large-scale, including a lengthy list of locations damage or destroyed including railway stations & junctions, hospitals, administrative buildings, marketplaces & bus stations. See the Registry for infrastructure of Donbass: http://www.реестр.укр/en/ . It is therefore not surprising that such industries are deliberately targeted by the ATO forces in order to harass, scare, and suppress the population, by firstly depriving them of a livelihood & secondly by making the physical environment unsustainable. Industrial plants are damaged, destroyed or put out of action. If a plant is hit or destroyed, a range of polluting materials can be released into the air or into the ground, potentially leaving a toxic legacy for civilians in the region.
In one specific named case, the area in which the chemical plant
‘Stirol’ is located in Donetsk had been under repeated attacks since May
2014. In August 2014, plant operators feared that a toxic leak of
nitrochlorobenzene could be potentially released if the plant is hit.
However, the plant stopped ammonia synthesis and processing back in May
2014.
The State Factory of Chemical Products, Donetsk (July 2015 Update)
A special mention with regards to this, since several Western media outlets have produced articles on a "dirty bomb" being developed by the DNR. These simpled-minded & alarmist articles based on hearsay, provide very little background information on the numerous attacks on the State Factory of Chemical Products.
Addendum 18 June: There is a twist to the series of shelling & missile strikes, in the apparent use of a thermobaric weapon to try to wipe the State Factory of Chemical Products, off the map. It is likely that radiation levels in Donetsk could increase, since according to an expert, there is a nuclear waste storage site in the vicinity. The context of this is truly disturbing if it does happen, as it seems to show the plans of Kiev, to turn parts of Donbass into a ecological wasteland & therefore render it uninhabitable. http://www.ostro.org/general/society/news/473114/
Summary of first 7 months of conflict
In just the first 7 months of the conflict, significant industrial facilities had to be shut down due to the ATO military operations including:
May: Gorlovska chemical & coke giant Stirol, ( 4000 employees); June: Severodonetsk chemical plant “Azot” – 8700 employees, July: “Gorlivka machine-building plant”- 500 employees. August: Enakievo Steel Plant – 7300 employees, Enakievskiy coke and chemical plant – 1200 employees, Khartsyzsk pipe plant – 2700 employees, Avdiivka Coke and Chemical Plant (AKHZ) – 4000 employees, Company-manufacturer of household appliances “Nord” – 3500 employees; Alchevsk Iron & Steel Works – 14500 employees, Yasinovskiy coke and chemical plant – 3300 employees, blast furnace at the Donetsk Metallurgical Plant– 10400 employees.
It must be noted a number of plants including the Lysychansk oil processing and Kramatorsk industrial engineering plants, along with the Severodonetsk chemical plant “Azot have been back in Kiev’s hands since summer 2014. It would be interesting to see what progress or extent of efforts made by Kiev authorities to repair damage and or deal with the environment consequences of the conflict. Can it be assumed that this theoretically ought to be part of the $1 billion aid package that Poroshenko mentioned? It remains to be seen what is the current situation & the state of play?
Underground storage & test sites
In a report, a Ukrainian Mining Union expressed its concern over a
potential Donbass ecological catastrophe as uncontrolled flooding of [disused] mines could release
nuclear & chemical pollution. Additional areas of significant long- term environmental concern, which is not helped by the state of current conflict:
Yunkom mine, which was the site of a nuclear explosion in 1979,
Oleksandr-Zakhid mine, used as underground storage for hazardous substances in the 1980s.
Out of a total of 95 state mines in Donbass only 24 were in normal operation; 13 mines were totally destroyed and 57 operated on a minimum capability. This seriously affects an industry that had previously employed around 70 000 miners. 9 coal mines flooded due to the destruction of the mine infrastructure & power lines feeding pumping stations. It has to be noted that inactive mines that are flooded can have a potential serious impact on groundwater due to increased contamination seepage of toxic substances. See this guide from the EPA on hazards: http://apps.environment-agency.gov.uk/wiyby/139297.aspx
Water Supply destruction & contamination
Early on in the conflict, the principal urban drinking water network were targeted a number of times, causing widespread shortage of drinking water in towns & cities across Donbass. The OSCE mentioned this in one of their June 2014 reports relating to a main pumping station and pipeline for the Donetsk city; [http://www.osce.org/ukraine-smm/119818]. We are talking about hundred of thousands of inhabitants having their water supplied cut off or disrupted by shelling.
The the Dnieper-Donbas Canal used for water supply was breached early on in the conflict. Water & sewage infrastructure were put out of service during the first half of 2015 due to the destruction of power lines during shelling an example: http://news.rin.ru/eng/news/82162/, & here http://news.rin.ru/eng/news///111248/ .
The beginning of June 2015 saw the head of the (Kiev controlled) Lugansk administration, Gennady Moskal, order the shutdown of water supply to parts of Donbass. "The
Ukrainian side almost completely stopped the supply of water. Aydar
pumping station has stopped supply, and so did others" - said Makhurenko
Interestingly, a Ukrainian environmental NGO, EPL, has carried out some studies in selected areas heavily affected by shelling, “EPL studied non-organic substances but shell explosions can also cause emission of organic substances that can travel for long distances via air and water ways.” Findings showed concentrations of heavy metals linked to convention munitions. These limited studies may offer a glimpse of what are the local effects of widespread use of munitions, similar to what the US army was aware since the 1980s in relation to the soil & air quality of military ranges.
ATO forces bombardment of populated areas by phosphorous munitions also can be an adverse impact on the environment, since it is a toxic chemical. The large-scale use of phosphorous in shells over a period of time is potentially harmful to the environment. " white phosphorous has destructive effects on the environment and also plants and may remain within the deep soil for several years without any changes." It also may impact local groundwater as well.
Nature reserves
The least ecological serious issue for Donbass as it currently stands, nevertheless it is has been featured in the Kiev media. It is reported that "the most widespread problem is fires triggered by military blasts – an
estimated 17% of forests and 24% of steppes in the ATO zone were
affected."[MENR & an NGO Environment, People, Law (EPL)]
The tone set by officials & experts in Kiev is negative to say the least, as exemplified by this "MENR has assigned specialists to monitor the situation in occupied
territories and to restore environmental safety when they are returned
to Ukrainian control."
The potential consequence of military strikes on plants cannot under
estimated over the long term, if we take into consideration the effects
of military operations in Yugoslavia & also Iraq. Numerous
industries were targeted by NATO during the 1999 attack on Serbia.
Noteworthy cases include the attacks on the Pancevo plant, where NATO
deliberately destroyed storage tanks that contained the raw materials
for PVC.
In brief
In Donetsk, an estimated 9,464 facilities and other structures were destroyed – including:
5,302 residential buildings;
